The Kitchener-Waterloo area in south central Ontario is one of the fastest expanding and most economically advantaged districts in Canada. The city of Cambridge is found in the southern part of the region and has a population of just over 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 with the amalgamation of the municipalities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local people resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" forced on them by the Ontario provincial government.
Today The Waterloo area is right up there with the most dynamic and diverse areas in Canada because it has some of the best agricultural land in Canada, two highly regarded Universities, a strong financial sector, numerous manufacturing plants and a rapidly expanding high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and numerous spinoff companies from the region's two univeristies.
People moving into the Region will find excellent job opportunities, a diversified cultural life, and unmatched educational facilities. K-W real estate is also quite a bit less expensive than similar homes in other major cities such as Toronto.
Indeed, residents and businesses in Waterloo Region have an enviable combination. They have the advantages of living in a smaller urban centre along with the considerable amenities of larger cities such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
