Medical advances included the widespread use of vaccines that eradicated the scourge of smallpox all over the world and polio was essentially put under control too. Most of what had been called the typical childhood diseases have become anything but usual in the age of baby boomers. Organ transplants are no more rare, blocked arteries in the heart can be repaired or bypassed, several cancers are treatable, and surgeries once considered impossible are now easy. Even test tube babies became possible with the birth of in vitro fertilization.
