Baby Boomers And Their History

The baby boomers generation is among the biggest in history. From 1946 through 1964, over three million babies a year were born to Americans. The current number of baby boomer is estimated at about 77 million persons. Their ages range now from the mid 40's to the mid 60's. This means that many boomers are currently in midlife and others are getting into or have already entered retirement.

It's great to look at the baby boomers generation in the context of history. Bear in mind that the Great Depression was in full strength just before the outbreak of World War II. Jobs were difficult to find and income was very low. Some families delayed or eschewed childbearing simply as they couldn't afford it. Birth rates remained low during the War as so many men were called into military service. It took a couple of years after the end of the War for it to become sure that the economy was growing and for families to be willing to take the leap of having kids.

A growing economy continued throughout most of the 60's and birthrates didn't begin to decline until 1965. The War had altered the nature of US families also. Women went to work outside the house in droves to replace the work force lost to the military, and some continued to work after the War ended. Returning service personnel took benefit of the the GI Bill to go to school and the VHA to purchase homes. Baby boomers were usually have better educated parents, working mothers, and to live in house owning households.

While the baby boomers generation was getting older, the whole US culture went through numerous changes. Most were too young to recall much about the Korean War, but some did experience the Cold War and the improvement of nuclear weapons. Many recall big historical events clearly, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis when the country seemed on the edge of war with the USSR. Many remember the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Some remember most clearly events like Watergate, the resignation of Nixon and the draft associated with the Vietnam War.

The baby boomers generation has left a wide and deep footprint on US history. They experienced the Human rights Movement and the Women's Rights Movement. The Vietnam War and all its suffering and devastation were not distant, but seen daily in almost every home on TV. Both former President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama are actually members of the baby boomers generation, the former born at the start of the period and the latter at its end.
